Bake Sale by Sara Varon is a graphic novel about a cupcake name Cupcake and her best friend Eggplant. Cupcake owns a bakery, is in a band, and sells baked goods in her spare time to earn extra money for a trip to Turkey. Cupcake is driven to go on this trip to meet her hero, Turkish Delight, a famous chef in Turkey. With so much going on, Cupcake has to figure out if she can really do it all.
All of the characters are fruits, vegetables, baked goods, baking ingredients, etc. The author's clever use of personification with the food characters keeps the reader engaged. The story does end quite abruptly, with no real conclusion. There are recipes in the back, which might prove to be a little complicated for the beginner baker.
Bake Sale is another nominee up for the Texas Bluebonnet Award this year.
